VW Portland 2010

General Information

Welcome to VW Portland, the first all VW drag racing weekend for 2010. This is the third year for Portland, and it is hoped that this weekend will grow into the southern state's premier VW motorsport event. This year VWMA and SouthCoast Raceway have included some additional competition on the Friday night and Saturday afternoon, incorporating a regular SouthCoast Raceway Friday night street meet and open general race event that VWs can participate in.

The weekend programme for Portland begins on the Friday with a dune buggy day at Swan Lake Sand Dunes (see Event Programme), followed by drag racing under lights in the evening back at the track. Registered VWs will be allowed to compete in the Friday night drags ($30 per driver paid at the track), against some of the local Portland drag racers. There will also be one or two demo passes by some of the quicker VW drivers to show the crowd what a Flat 4 can do!

On Saturday morning there will be a street parade and static display in the Portland CBD. This is an excellent opportunity for all VWs, competing or spectating, to showcase their cars to the Portland public. It will also constitute some judging for the Show'n'Shine on Sunday. The parade and display will be from 9.30 until 11.00 (see programme).

Scrutineering happens back at the track from 11am until 12noon, after which their will be a driver's briefing. At this time, an open drag meet will be occurring between 10.30am - 2pm. From 12-2pm, there will be a dedicated VW lane for practice and qualifying, followed by VW only practice and qualifying from 2-5pm between elimination rounds. For an additional $70, VW competitors can actually compete in the meet, which has prize money on offer.

On Sunday, it's all Volkswagen, with an additional hour practice in the morning from 9am - 10am, followed by a 3 round non- elimination round robin, elimination semi finals, and a final.

Both VW Portland and VW Warwick are 1/8th mile tracks, a perfect introduction for the novice, yet long enough to entice the professionals to go hard. If you have never tried drag racing, but have always harbored a desire to give it a try, these all VW race meets provide a non-threatening environment, where you can learn at your own pace and collect some useful tips from the experienced racers. Classes cover Aircooled, Watercooled, VW Bodied Other Engine, VW Specials (ie Buggies) and Trikes.

For 2010, both events will have their own separate points and trophy presentations, plus a combined State of Origin points system to determine the overall winning VW Drag Racing State, which will be announced at the Warwick event. With a number of interstate competitors planning to attend both events, the final result will be quite close.

This website offers some general information about how to drag race, the programme and prices for VW Portland, and an entry form for competitors. As pre-entry is mandatory, competitors must have their entry and money to VWMA by the 12th February. No entries will be accepted on the day.

See you on the track!
