Blue Vision
We all have a creative flair, but few
brave the public domain to share
their talents, nor the courage to
navigate unchartered boundaries.
Only true artists venture the
unknown. They are a rare breed,
endowed with a longing to produce unique
works of art regardless of the personal and
financial sacrifices. John Waldron considers
himself one of the fortunate few. In true artistic
style, John has been able to orchestrate a
lifestyle of managing Art Galleries with his own
personal artistic abilities, a combination that
has seen him face many creative challenges,
including Volkswagens.
Wanting to transform
basket case Volkswagens into head turning
show winners requires an eccentric bent, and
artists come better equipped than anyone
else to create that slightly left of centre winning
masterpiece.

Karmann history
The rise of Volkswagen from the
ravages of post-war Germany is a
script that most Hollywood writers
dream of penning at least once in
their career.
It's the kind of stuff legends
are made of, and gave the humble
Beetle a rare and precious heritage that
has seen it live far beyond the limitations
of its steel body. But Volkswagen was not
alone in the struggle to re-build.

Manx-a-Mania
Being a firefighter and a surf
life saver, Nat Gohl already
had the two most important
criteria when deciding on his
next perfect Volkswagen project. Firstly,
it had to be red, and secondly it must be
able to go on the sand. His search led
him to a genuine Meyers Manx Buggy
hiding in a shed, and after consulting the
manxclub.com website to ensure the
authenticity, Nat began to transform the rough offroad diamond in to the shiny
Glasurit Red street and beach machine
you see today.

Stoker VW Drag Racing
Affectionately known as 'Wasted
Wages', this Dave and Loraine
Stoker owned VW Drag car holds
no punches when it comes time
to put 'your money where your
mouth is'. Having already run an
impressive 10.01 @ 138mph for the
quarter at the WSID at the capable
hands of Mike Waldron, this ongoing project
looks set to break the 10 second barrier in
2006. Recently, some time spent with Mike
Kristen on the Custom Bugs & Buses dyno
gave Dave the sort of tune he'd been searching
for, which will hopefully translate to another
tenth on the track. In this article we'll look
at the bare bones that make this sensational
drag car tick, so be prepared for enough tech
info to fill your head for a lifetime.

Kombi Kontrol
When I first learned that some light aircraft were Volkswagen powered, I used to run for cover when
ever I heard a plane approaching. Who could blame me? I own and run a 40hp Beetle and it's scary
enough stopping in peak hour traffic, let alone dropping from a thousand metres! The icing on the
cake came when rumour had it that split Kombi vans were actually used by the Royal Australian
Airforce to deploy and land Mirage and F-111 fighter jets. Control of the skies from the cockpit of
a splittie? Had the RAAF gone completely mad? Andre Hummel has the actual proof that such a
Volkswagen did exist, and its role as an official Telescrambler for the RAAF was a serious concern.
This 1967 VW Double Door Panel van was converted by the RAAF in 1970-71 and re-named AF/
MRC - 802 Mobile Strip Operation Telebriefing System.

Camper...23 Window Style
Start a sentence in a crowded Volkswagen club meet
with the phrase '23 windows', and watch the whole room
turn as one. Finish the sentence with 'Devon converted
camper' and you'll be wiping VW drool off your shoes.
Kieran Featherstone from Fremantle in Western Australia
is very proud to be able to name drop such sacred
Volkswagen terms, as he is the proud owner and restorer of a 1962
23 Window Samba Deluxe Devon converted camper, nicknamed
GBJ. And if that's not enough to make your jaw drop, then maybe the
$600 purchase price will bowl you over! This story only gets better.

Ron's Riyad
Ron Croft's 1978 Riyad Yellow
GLS Mk I Golf is an excellent
example of why the VW water
cooled enthusiasts are an
integral part of the local VW
scene. This car grabs the attention
of the most staunchest, hard core,
air cooled devotee, and for good reason.
Ron's years of experience repairing and
maintaining Volkswagens, as well as his
attention to detail when creating a show
winning car, are all clearly evident in this
Mk I.

Hot Bug
Volkswagen enthusiasts have
always been known to accept
a challenge (or even invent the
odd one or two) to create something
different with their cars, and over
the years there have been few VW rocks
left unturned in the quest for that unique
ride. Volkswagens have been stretched,
shrunk, chopped, raised, lowered, raced,
dragged and pimped, and taken or driven
to all points of the globe and back, and
the obsession shows no sign of abating.
Kurt Phillips from Western Australia was
not immune to this infectious 'bug' and
decided that VW's would be his passion.
