Our touring itinerary was to start from our home in Adelaide, travel the Nullabor to Norseman following the Western Australian Goldfields to Geraldton, up along the North West Coast highway to the Northern Territory border, over to Darwin, and then back down the Stuart Highway via Uluru to home. Our mode of transport? ‘Boris’ our 1974 Volkswagen Australia Sopru conversion Kombi camper with an 1800cc engine and automatic transmission. Boris is our third Kombi in the Wirth garage, joining a 1970 ex-PMG Kombi and a 1978 microbus. Boris is in immaculate original and since purchasing the camper we have made a few minor changes to make traveling more comfortable and reliable. Electronic ignition kit was fitted for ease of maintenance, some extra shelving in the wardrobe hanging space to make storage more practical, a UHF radio under the dash, a satellite phone (just in case), a dipstick Oil Temp gauge and for extra 12-volt power a 105amp portable Thumper battery under the sink, rather than the traditional dual battery system. Spares included gas, oil, a small tool kit, a spare fan belt and some assorted nuts/bolts/screws and an accelerator cable. The plan was to use the Kombi to sleep in, although we took along a tent in case we decided to spend more than one night in a particular spot. We also chose not to use the roof bed, as my ‘portly’ stature might not be well received by the Sopru upstairs accomodation...

VW Magazine Australia

VWMA is an Australian owned and published enthusiasts magazine serving both the aircooled and watercooled Volkswagen scene nationally. Published quarterly (Feb, May, Aug, Nov), the magazine is available through newsagents Australia wide or via subscription, and covers every aspect of the hobby, from the very early models through to the latest innovations, motorsport, offroad, kit, custom, books, toys and shows. If it doesn't appear in VWMA then it isn't VW related.

Now in its seventh year, VWMA also hosts two drag racing weekends, sponsors a variety of VW shows, and supports events across the country. Printed and distributed by Australian companies, VWMA is also fortunate to have access to a talented pool of home based VW photojournalists and print/web technicians, who work with VWMA to produce quality VW entertainment each issue. And in 2011, the magazine's website has evolved to encompass the online and portable information revolution with the inclusion of additional media content to enrich the printed reading experience.
