Europe is where land speed racing had its beginning in the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The United Kingdom played a heavy role in this new motorsport with famous families like the Seagraves and Campbell's taking part on the Sands of Pendine. Eventually these same land speed racers gravitated to the U.S.A. and the sandy shores of Daytona Beach, Florida, in search of a longer and smoother course. As speeds increased to 300mph, even the Daytona Beaches tidal sands were no longer deemed safe and the racers headed west to Utah and it's famously smooth and expansive Bonneville Salt Flats. With few exceptions, Bonneville is now the heart and soul of land speed racing and hosts five major speed events each year. The five events comprise one for select F.I.A. sanctioned maximum speed record runs, one for high speed motorcycles and two for full competition race cars and run by the worlds oldest land speed racing organization, the Southern California Timing Association (S.C.T.A./B.N.I.). The last event is the World of Speed, dedicated for both land speed specific race cars as well as novice land speed racers testing their everyday street cars (two restricted speed categories).

VW Magazine Australia

VWMA is an Australian owned and published enthusiasts magazine serving both the aircooled and watercooled Volkswagen scene nationally. Published quarterly (Feb, May, Aug, Nov), the magazine is available through newsagents Australia wide or via subscription, and covers every aspect of the hobby, from the very early models through to the latest innovations, motorsport, offroad, kit, custom, books, toys and shows. If it doesn't appear in VWMA then it isn't VW related.

Now in its seventh year, VWMA also hosts two drag racing weekends, sponsors a variety of VW shows, and supports events across the country. Printed and distributed by Australian companies, VWMA is also fortunate to have access to a talented pool of home based VW photojournalists and print/web technicians, who work with VWMA to produce quality VW entertainment each issue. And in 2011, the magazine's website has evolved to encompass the online and portable information revolution with the inclusion of additional media content to enrich the printed reading experience.
